The Candy Bar, 33 St James Street, Brighton 2001
13th July 2001. The Love Lounge with two not-so-old disco queers called Wildblood and Queenie makes their Candy Bar debut – over there at 33 St James Street, Kemp Town, Brighton. Bar stools for a booth, belt drive for decks, the wobble forever as needles bumped across records and our Candy Bar debut was made. Music to watch lesbians by, as poolside vibes at St James could ever be. Dulcie Danger and Michelle Manetti connecting with their guesting. Me and Queenie counting our in-house blessings. Saving up for those SL120’s. Music and wine, soulful house of the Blue Six kind as Queenie honed that pre-DSD sound and we eyed up our time to come at Wet Pussy Club. Love and respect to Kim Lucas and Rachael Venia Woodgate for the heads-up, the back-up, and the bounce we needed to get back on the girl’s scene. From those Shameless Housewife’s via Queenie’s Meech adventures with Stroppy & Butch at the Zanzibar to Brighton’s Candy Bar, the Candy Bar Women’s Dance Tent at Brighton Pride and the St James Street Party – a journey that changed our disco trajectory and saw this Club Shame devotee heading Paul Kemp and Sunday Sundae’s way thanks to Dulcie Danger, Richard Jones and a love of right proper house music. Escape Club action that defined the DJ I always dreamt I could be. Started back in a Candy Bar doorway destined to open the doors to more, more, more.
