25 years ago and two young queers about to embark on the romantic adventure of their lives would date on a dancefloor at Paradox, making Wild Fruit their flirtacious playground, the sexy backdrop to the beginning of something that would make my life the wonder it is today. Those two house music loving young queers were my missus Queen Josephine and I, and Wild Fruit would go on to play a pivitol part in our lives together. As clubbers, as DJs and as writers.
This year will see Wild Fruit make its final glorious glitter-covered farewell at Brighton Pride Festival and it was a real honour for me to write the 25 Years Of Fruity Clubbing article for Brighton Pride Magazine. Paying tribute to the promoter Paul Kemp, and his fabulous camp band of designers, photographers, DJs, dancers, hosts & hostesses, performers and amazing clubbers who made Wild Fruit the legendary night it is.
A true revolution in gay clubbing it really did change the way I played my way through my queer disco world. From the career inspiring world class guest and resident DJs to its groundbreaking soundtrack, stunning production values and decent fundraising ethos, Wild Fruit delivered something I’d never been part of before. Add the unbelievable Wild Fruit Big Top Dance Tent as we united with Brighton Pride on the Level and Preston Park and you have a club night that was so much more than some Monday night dancefloor action.
It was Wild Fruit and nothing since has come close. So many amazing memories and friendships made, so many goosebumps, so many smiles. All because of a banana and two grapes on a flyer that made Wild Fruit destination clubbing back in 1992. All because we no longer had no Shame and dancing together under a disco ball of love made us finer, more fabulous people. Come this Brighton Pride when David Morales and co. play that one last Wild Fruit tune the emotions will be huge for me but the love will be bigger.
Wild Fruit. 25 years delivering pleasure from its first tune to its last. Just how all clubbing should be. Long may our memories of one of Brighton’s finest remain forever Wild and Fruity!
