Here we go again. Yet another Tory #TBT as they announce their 21st-century version of Clause 28. Banning the support of trans kids in school, sanctioning silence and scarring another generation of queer kids with shame. Shame that I endured growing up a queer kid in the 80s, shame that has undoubtedly shaped who I am today and how I value my identity.
So we #TBT 1992. Me and mine propelled on the streets of London to protest when the metaphorical gay thrasher that was Thatcher’s Section 28 (Paragraph 16) hit the statute books.
Fast forward to 2024, and the Tories continue to drag us back. Rights removed, safe spaces stolen, and the rights of educators to do right by LGBTQ+ kids taken away. I genuinely can’t believe we’re here again watching all those steps towards true LGBTQI+ equality stripped away by the headline-grabbing, election-fueled fear-mongering of Sunak and co. But we must have hope, hope that together, the LGBTQ+ community and our valued allies, we can stop this. We fought the Tories then, we’ll fight them again.
Vote them out. Stop the bigotry. End the culture wars. Protect Trans kids. Pass me my placard.
