It was the 8th of June 2003 when this nervous Wildblood made my Sunday Sundae debut at 10 Marine Parade, the infamous Escape Club. Two and a half hours of afternoon chillout with 30 minutes at the end filled with house – nothing to scare the (disco) horses. It was a day I will always treasure, a path into a family of Sunday Sundae clubbers, the wonders of Audio and Patterns and the DJs and promoters that changed the direction of my deck life. Thanks to Dulcie Danger’s persistence, Paul Kemp’s belief and Richard Jones’ DJ lessons (“Smile Kate, smile FFS!!!”) things never sounded the same again. 21 years and counting and Queenie and I had the pleasure of continuing our love-long Sunday Sundae residency at this year’s Pride Reunion Party.
The sass and the sweat were ever present, the joy was always jumping, and the team at Patterns was forever supportive. Edna on the door, Roo with the dance, Richard with the smiles, Dulcie with the support, Paul with the vision, Mr Hayward very much missed. DJs destined to do their thing with brilliance (Rob Richards, David Godding, Mikee Hollywood, Neil Roden, Oxylion and Danger, Sarah Chapman, Sami Capaldi, James Mackie and the legendary Hollie and Mrs Jones), a Pride Sunday collection of clubbers prepped for the dance of the weekend (and a grin to Madan). It was, as it always is, a Pride highlight, as the house classics we loved diverted by the occasional queer disco classic brought us together under the glitterball for one more dance. I hope that dance, like the friendships made there over the decades, is never-ending and we’ll return next year to hug and gossip and laugh, wiggle and marvel at our magnificence again. Whatever life deals us, the losses, the loves, the lives changed forever, that gay as **** dancefloor is all that matters comes the first Sunday in August. Just as it has always been. Just as it always will be. Until next year Sunday Sundae, until next year.
Listen to our Sunday Sundae Pride Reunion 2024 live set via Mixcloud. It’s house, it’s Italo disco, it’s slightly overexcited at times. Which is nice. Enjoy.
