Sound Affects #44: Wildblood & Queenie, Richard Evans, Michael Cragg

Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, ideas around how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It’s organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.

Guest speakers:
Michael Cragg has been writing about pop music for over a decade and has interviewed everyone from Lady Gaga to Lorde, via Little Mix, Miley Cyrus, and Britney Spears. He has written for outlets including Vogue, the Guardian, GQ, BBC, The Observer, Popjustice, Dazed and Billboard. His previous book Reach for the Stars: 1996–2006: Fame, Fallout and Pop’s Final Party was awarded the 2024 Penderyn Music Book Prize. His new book Can’t Get You Out of My Head: In Search of Kylie is a revelatory exploration of one of the world’s most successful pop stars, Kylie Minogue. It’s a journey into the psyche of one of the world’s most enigmatic pop stars. Via a mix of brand new interviews, a dash of oral history and some joyfully irreverent music writing, Can’t Get You Out of My Head aims to put the puzzle pieces together.

Wildblood & Queenie – Celebrating three decades as a DJ duo, Wildblood and Queenie forever take pleasure in playing the finest disco and disco-infused house grooves on the dancefloors of club nights and on their 1BTN Radio Show (every 2nd & 4th Friday 13:00-16:00 101.4FM DAB+). They’re residents at Patterns in Brighton, have played Brighton Pride and Love Supreme, as well as their own club nights, Shameless Hussies, and Housewives’ Choice. Kate works with Queer Heritage South as a lesbian community champion, archiving queer stories from Brighton’s past.

Richard Evans has worked in the music industry for over thirty years in a variety of roles, including positions at London Records, Factory Records and MTV Europe. His first book is Listening to the Music the Machines Make – Inventing Electronic Pop 1978-1983 came out in 2023 and he delivered a brilliant talk at Sound Affects at the time. His new book is Looking Backwards Towards the Future: The Story of Ultravox is the first authorised biography of post-punk mavericks turned commercial superstars, Ultravox. It’s the definitive account of one of Britain’s most eccentric, unusual and uncompromising groups.
