Perfect Distraction: Kiki The Movie

Paris Is Burning seared into my soul from the moment the title sequence rolled many voguing moons ago. The passion, the pain and the perfect dance moves threw shade over every queer celluloid adventure I’d previously seen. It got me. A achingly honest portrayal of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America that I will always cherish.

Kiki The Movie looks like joining Paris Is Burning in the ranks of unmissable documentary. Promising “a riveting and complex insight into a safe space created and governed by LGBTQ youth of color, who are demanding happiness and political power” it looks set to deliver “an exciting coming of age story about agency, resilience and the transformative artform that is voguing”. Which is all good with me. I’ve always been a sucker for a pop, dip and spin. And I’ve a feeling I’m gonna fall as deep for Twiggy Pucci Garçon,  Chi Chi, Gia, Chris, Divo, Symba and Zariya as hard as I did for Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, Angie Xtravaganza, and Willi Ninja. Because this butch loves a queen or…eleven.
