50 Tunes For 50 Years: Simpson Tune

Sunday Sundae. Two words that have brought me more joy than any other double sonic phonic, although I’ll never say no to a DD. The club night that made me, that the took this sullen faced DJ and taught me to smile, to read a crowd, to love an anthem and appreciate the Sunday clubbers of my city. Whether a wet and windy winter session with only the bass line loving diehards or a Pride weekender filled to the terrace rafters with my fellow giant glitterball worshippers, Sunday Sundae has given me more goosebumps than a determined waterfowl on the bumper cars.

She (and yeah I’ve always seen her as she) was a Centro Sunday service I adored and an Escape I was honoured to be part of. She provided my Audio pleasures and my Patterns for life. She was and is a night where it was all about the treasures within, Paul Kemp and the promotion team, the venue management, the door wonders, those esquite flyers the cheeky bar boys and girls, the RealBrighton snappers, the sound as security, the sounder sound team (always on call for that lick) and the clubbers, oh you clubbers. Forever family, whatever the world threw at us.

And it was the DJs. The DJs who taught me so much, from my craft to my life, as every b.p.m. brought us together behind the decks. Thank you Dulcie, Richard, Chris, Hollie, Pete, Craig, Mikalis, Nick, Jeffery, Dave, Guy, Seamus, Verity, Bryony, Jonny, Neil, Thomas, Ben, James, Sami, Jon, Alex, Freddie, Queenie and every groove generator who graced the Sunday Sundae decks. Your names will forever be in my hearts (and scribbled on numerous 12” sleeves, heart and all).

And the tune? I need more than 50 years to finalise even 50 tunes that represent the joy of Sunday Sundae but this one, Bring It Down (Da BMR’s Club Rework) by Simpson Tune, has everything about our favourite session engrained in its grooves. A female vocal, diva fuelled and defiant, a bass line to rock the foundations of 10 Marine Parade and a drop that makes your heart stop. For one moment. Until you look out at the dance floor, raise your hands in the air and realise you are in the place you always wanted to be. Sunday Sundae. Forever family, forever home. For Simon.
