What is so shocking about this latest attack is we’re not shocked. Let’s be honest here, most LGBTQI members of our community know that regardless of pledges made, policies changed or statements issued by politicians, authorities and services we are all likely to face such violence at some point in our lives. I’ve been queer bashed twice in Brighton over the years and I’ve stood in front of way too many men (and I use the term men lightly) with hatred in their eyes as they shouted abuse at me and mine. This intolerance won’t end until we ensure words of support become action. Until sentences for homophobic hate crime reflect the damage done. Until condemnation becomes a conviction. Until national and international abuses of LGBTQI rights are addressed and ended. Until our LGBTQI global community feel truly safe, where ever they live.
