We’ve all been there. DJs and devotees, campaigners and clubbers, sharing memes and a.m. murmurings, sharing on socials and bringing the sass to afters as we fill the world with righteous intent. But it’s the deeds you create down the disco that determine the changes you make. Fulfilling those late-night “if only” with actions that deliver a truly diverse and inclusive dancefloor for everybody isn’t easy to do. Principles to live by that fill the dancefloor, a dream being delivered week after week, year after year by He.She.They, the event series, record label and clothing brand created by the genuinely glorious Sophia Kearney and Steven Braines. Someone should really make a documentary about them. You know, all back story and brilliance and all that. Oh, hang on…
I’m of an age, a persuasion and a brain that seems to have always been the outsider. Ahead of the acceptance curve, appearing before my kind were truly seen, the queer kid in Thatcher’s 80s, the deviant activist surviving Major’s back to basic years, the neurodivergent soul struggling to mask through life before the campaigners challenged the norm, the old disco dear desperately scanning the line-up for DJs of my certain age. But with He.She.They. my divergent self is their delight, my age no barrier, my gender identity and sexuality forever welcomed. Changing who is behind the decks means putting us behind the decks. Finding Queenie and Wildblood a place at He.She.They. Just like the many, many queer wonders and glorious allies on He.She.She. dancefloors around the world, a home has been found. A home for everyone.
So it is with a pinch of chuffed disbelief that Queenie and I find ourselves joining He.She.They. at Concorde 2 on Saturday May 18th for a terrace party fuelled with house and techno. Jacked up disco anyone? A date in our diary. Our name on posters Queenie and I still can’t stop grinning about everytime we see them. Horse Meat Disco and Charles the Princess, Riley Rex, Suki Maki, Sxbrina Jade and Wildblood and Queenie? Duck me, that looks good. See you at the front. We’ll be the queer kids that finally fit in, the elder silver disco dears being seen and the neurodivergent DJ being heard. Loud and oh so clear.
