Wildblood’s October Oats

As we said farewell to this sound summer, I found myself considering DJ retirement. Maybe the time had come to hang up my headphones and head to the academic hills. Then I thought about it. The gigs are too sweet and, as always, the music to inspiring. As the genres continue to mutate and generate new thrills I just couldn’t quite bear to say farewell.

And why would I with corkers like this lot round? First up are the effortlessly stylish beats of Radio Slave’s ‘Radio Slave Presents Strictly Rhythms Vol.5’. They’ve raided what must be house music’s deepest vaults and come up with a mix so fine it’ll knock spots of your winter wardobe. Impressive work from the legendary New York label and Mr Slave. As is Soul Mekanik ’81 Deluxe’ on WONK. The missus and I can’t get enough of this classy 2010 interpretation of all things Mekanik as their 2005 release ‘Eighty One’ is reworked by the likes of Maurice Foulton, Freeform Five, Cosmic Me and the legendary Greg Wilson. Space dust has nothing on this cosmic electronic magic.

Other October delights come in the form of Commix’s minimal tech-fed D’n’B festival ‘Re:Call To Mind’ on Metalheadz, Masomenos’ minimal wonder ‘Balloons’ on Welcome To Masomenos and the cheeky chap that is ‘Sixteen F**king Years Of G-Stone Recordings’ on G-Stone. Beats you’ll find hard to beat.

Finally two reasons why I’ll not be packing in this playing loud tunes for living lark. Totally opposite ends of the spectrum, yet somehow completely connected. Simian Mobile Disco’s ‘Simian Mobile Disco Is Fixed’ on Defend Record makes the kind of connections that would, in the words of that great word(Smith), make Caligula blush. Warped beats, twisted electronica and just the right side of vocals to sweeten the seduction. I’m blushing as I type. Where as ‘Tensnake In The House’ on Defected you could take home to meet your mother. Well almost. They say it is the year of the Tensnake and if his mix of cosmic disco and LoFi funk is anything to go by it’s gonna be a bloody good year. A ‘Coma Cat’ kinda year. Enjoy.
