Perfect Distractions – Metronomy ‘She Wants’ Because Music

Some recommendations you can always rely on. They say, you buy. And so it is with Chris Coco’s Melodica on Mixcloud. Every Monday something new (or two) pops into my musical consciousness and I’m smitten. The lists too long but this week it’s all about Metronomy and their brilliant new single ‘She Wants’ on Because Records. I can’t think of a finer way of wasting … Continue reading Perfect Distractions – Metronomy ‘She Wants’ Because Music

Mr Tensnake I presume – Audio + Maxxi Soundsystem present Tensnake LIVE 04.02.11

Friday night and we put away frivolous things and concentrated on life’s finer stuff. Beats, beer and mates. Wrapped up in perfectly formed Audio Brighton style, Tensnake delivered one of the finer sets I’ve ever heard. Yes there was Coma Cat and yes there was disco but as the groove of one merged into the groove of another courtesy of a re-tweeked Audio soundsystem (Pige … Continue reading Mr Tensnake I presume – Audio + Maxxi Soundsystem present Tensnake LIVE 04.02.11

Perfect Distractions – Maya Jane Coles’ Humming Bird

Distractions have been hard to ignore this week. The news providing moments of hope, horror and disgust as the human spirit continues to amaze and baffle me in equal measure. Music seems both irrelevant and vital right now, soundtracks outweighs by chanting yet providing essential hope. There are certain tunes that stay with you because of the images of the time, a chosen album or … Continue reading Perfect Distractions – Maya Jane Coles’ Humming Bird

Feeling Medieval – Fake Blood make me boil once more

Seems I can’t go straight to my desk and write essays. Like Billy Connolly once said when you get into work you don’t go straight to it. You ease yourself in. Well thanx to a woman who knows far too much about music for her own good I’m feeling medieval. Fake Blood’s Medieval. And not getting straight too it. The fuzzy distorted bass is too … Continue reading Feeling Medieval – Fake Blood make me boil once more

Must be something about being born by the seaside and having sea salt in my bloodstream that makes me love Brighton so. As January comes to its long waited for conclusion, there’s plenty to look forward to in the next few months … Continue reading Reasons to be Brighton 1.2.3.4. In who’s name do you condemn? Protest against the disruption at the funeral of David Kato

Two posts in one day on the same subject? Well yes. I’m bloody fuming. The Guardian website is reporting scenes of disruption at the funeral of gay activist David Kato in Uganda. Apparently “towards the end of an emotional ceremony to mourn Kato, who was bludgeoned to death on Wednesday, Anglican pastor Thomas Musoke launched into a homophobic tirade, shocking the dozens of gay men … Continue reading In who’s name do you condemn? Remembering David Kato – stop the deportation of Brenda Namigadde to Uganda

I’ve been thumped cos of my sexuality before. Bashed cos I’m queer, my walk was too butch, my hair too short, my label too obvious. I’ve seen hate in a bigots eyes as they took offence at an over camp Queenie giving it a proud and loud ‘I’m a lesbian!’ in a not so safe Saturday night taxi queue. I’ve never been in fear of … Continue reading Remembering David Kato – stop the deportation of Brenda Namigadde to Uganda

Conflict averted! Me and my West Ham missus

Blimey that was crap. There she was. A happy and hopeful Hammer, 45 minutes away from the Carling Cup final and a face off with my beloved Gunners. But that sweet missus of mine has the misfortune of being born into an affliction for which there is no cure. The family team is West Ham and so Queenie’s die (hard) was rolled. Hammer till she … Continue reading Conflict averted! Me and my West Ham missus
